Wage boosts aims to provide 78 employees with security and stability.
The recommended rate ensures staff earn a wage that meets the real cost of living.
Northern Ireland is the UK region with the highest proportion of non-Living Wage jobs.

Follow Leisure Group, the holding company which operates the Slim's Healthy Kitchen brand has been accredited as a Living Wage Employer. The Living Wage commitment will see all staff over the age of 18 working at Follow Leisure receive a minimum hourly wage of £9.50. The rate is significantly higher than the government minimum for over 23s, which currently stands at £8.91 per hour. Those of school leaving age (16-18) will be paid £7.50 compared to the National Minimum Wage of £4.62.

Northern Ireland is the UK region with the highest proportion of non-Living Wage jobs in the UK (23%), with over 202,000 jobs paying less than the real Living Wage. Despite this, Follow Leisure has committed to pay the real Living Wage and deliver a fair day's pay for a hard day's work.

The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. Since 2011 the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 250,000 people and put over £1.3 billion extra into the pockets of low paid workers.

Gary McIldowney, owner of Follow Leisure said, "The UK hospitality sector is under pressure after the partial easing of lockdown restrictions due in part to staff shortages. Waiting staff and chefs are in particular demand as they had been forced to take up new opportunities during the pandemic. Overseas workers also returned home at the beginning of the pandemic, and many have not returned due to travel restrictions. The hospitality industry has traditionally been a low paying sector coupled with high operating costs, but we want to ensure our staff get paid a decent wage for their work".

Follow Leisure Group is a multi-venue hospitality operator and owner of some of Northern Ireland's leading eateries including Slim's Healthy Kitchen, Canteen, Output Espresso and Morning Martha with 78 full and part-time employees.

Mr McIldowney continued, "We want to be transparent and ethical about the care of our employees. This is a hugely important investment to ensure stability of our business and to recognise the importance of our team, which is our most valuable asset. The real living wage should be high on the agenda of every business. We aim to demonstrate that it is possible to deliver this wage boost to our employees even in the most challenging of circumstances".

In addition to boosting the wages of employees at Follow Leisure the group have a mental health programme "Follow On" that offers coaching to help with confidence, anxiety and depression, free staff meals while working, a paid day off on their birthday for salaried staff and quarterly team building events.

Laura Gardiner, Director, Living Wage Foundation said, "We're delighted that Follow Leisure has joined the movement of over 7,000 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to go further than the government minimum to make sure all their staff earn enough to live on.

"They join thousands of small businesses, as well as household names such as Burberry, Barclays, Everton Football Club and many more. These businesses recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer and they, like Follow Leisure, believe that a hard day's work deserves a fair day's pay".

Whatever Happened to Kate Jackson?

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO KATE JACKSON?

Growing up when I did, I became aware of television as a child in the late '60s and early '70s. I had an aunt who loved the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, and after watching it a few times with her, I got hooked on it myself and ran home from school to watch it at 3:00. My mother objected, but her objections were overridden by the fact that her sister-in-law introduced me to the show.

The dawning of awar e ness of television coincided with the rise of a young actress named Kate Jackson, who played Daphne in Dark Shadows — and later in one of the spin-off films, which my brother and I begged my parents to bring us to the local Drive-In theater to see. I don't remember much about that film, but I did remember Kate Jackson who, even then, had an unusual beauty, along with brains.

Soon after, she starred in The Rookies, a police drama in the mid-70s. I was sorry that was canceled, but she bounced back big-time with Charlie's Angels, one of the biggest television hits of all time. Jackson was considered the star, the only known actress among the three. When the show became a hit, it was expected to catapult her career, but today, Farrah Fawcett is remembered for some dramatic triumphs in television films in the '80s, most prominently The Burning Bed, and for her well-documented decline and death to cancer in 2009 (she died the same day as Michael Jackson). Jaclyn, considered a great beauty but not a great actress, later made a fortune as an entrepreneur and businesswoman, mainly through her clothing line. Today she is worth $150 million.

To me, Charlie's Angels does not hold up well. I saw it recently on one of those free TV channels. The plots (pretty much the same in every episode) are absurd and the writing is terrible. Farrah shows her teeth and Jaclyn's voice never rises above a whisper. Kate did her best to bring some flavor to her role and, in fact, was nominated twice for an Emmy during her three seasons with the show.

After that, she went on to a successful run in another series, The Scarecrow and Mrs. King. I was busy in college during those years and never saw more than an episode or two. However, I was a fan of Baby Boom, a spin-off from the Diane Keaton film. Sadly, it only lasted one season.

All during her television series years and beyond, Jackson starred in several made-for-TV movies, many of which did well. As a film actress, she is best remembered for the 1973 film Thunder and Lightning with David Carradine, Loverboy, notable for being Patrick Dempsey's first film, and Making Love. The latter was mostly panned when it was released, but I think it stands out today as a groundbreaking film about a married man with homosexual longings falling for a promiscuous gay man. Jackson was excellent as the shocked wife.

As a fan, the story that haunts me most is that, apparently, Dustin Hoffman wanted her to play the Meryl Streep role in Kramer vs Kramer. However, Aaron Spelling wouldn't let her take time off from Charlie's Angels to make the film. It was a supporting role! How could Spelling be so heartless? Streep went on to win her first Oscar for the role. My feeling is that Streep was already on her way to a film career at that point and would have gone on to do all the great films she did. But when I think of Kate Jackson, I can't help asking, "What if . . .?" That film really could have given her a trajectory in an entirely different direction. I wonder if she still occasionally tosses and turns at night saying, "What if . . . ?"

In the end, as successful as Charlie's Angels was, I think it ruined what could have been a brilliant career. It was a short-term gain and a long-term loss.

Kate Jackson has not made any television or film appearances since 2009 and is now 72 years old. In recent years, she sued her financial advisor and settled on an undisclosed sum. I've read that she now lives in her home state of Alabama and her fortune has dwindled to next to nothing. For years, she has supposedly been working on a memoir, but it hasn't yet materialized.

Surely, there is a producer or director who could find a juicy part for her in an acclaimed Netflix series or a character part in a feature film. If she indeed wishes to work.

Kate, wherever you are, you still have a solid and loving fan base out here. You have worked hard and you owe us nothing. But we'd sure like to see you make the comeback of all comebacks and be our Golden Girl for the next decade or so. We wish you well.

It's no secret that dark colours are quickly becoming the new neutral, and this may be tempting you to buy a black sofa. But, here are a few decorating tips you should consider before you introduce the darkest colour in the largest piece of furniture in your room.

If black is the new "it" neutral, should I buy a black sofa?

Since black is the new trendy neutral that's quickly replacing grey, I thought it was time to talk about black sofas.

During the tuscan trend, brown was the most common sofa colour.

During the grey trend, charcoal was the IT sofa.

Now, it's back to the 80s with forest green and black sofas.

Now that Tuscan brown (including gold beige) and grey sofas are looking dated. And white sofas are not practical for many of us, even though I know some of you have considered it. So, I thought it was time for me to share my thoughts on the black sofa.

Scrolling Pinterest for images and inspiration for this post, I found some elegant looks like the channeled velvet sofa above. But overwhelmingly, most felt stark and minimal. And I really think the trends are moving towards softer, more layered looks.

So, as you know, it is my mission in life to help you live with more colour.

As I've said many times before:

A black sofa is a contrast problem

I think the challenge with the black sofa is that it makes it even harder to introduce softness and especially colour into your room.

Black is by definition high contrast and graphic. Black is also the absence of all colour. And sofas are LARGE – this is a very HEAVY place to introduce black. That's why black sofas are riskier than grey or even brown ones. They are a big commitment to the heaviest colour on earth, smack dab in the center of your room.

Lots of white, including white walls, are being used to balance a black sofa in the images I'm seeing. Opposites balance and attract right?

Well yes, but black and white are EXTREME opposites. And the distance between them is so vast that the look is cold and stark most of the time.

Contrast is one of the most important and challenging aspects of design, and the return of the black sofa brings the issue to a head.

What is the best colour for a sofa?

I've always said that buying a sofa in your favourite colour is the most timeless choice.

It's trendy neutrals that date the fastest. Especially dark neutrals.

But buying a large item, like a sofa, is where people typically get really conservative about colour.

And that's too bad. Because when you're putting together a room, you only have so many places to make a well-proportioned injection of colour. The sofa, the area rug, accent chairs, the walls, and large scale art. That's pretty much it. You'll notice that none of these are really small and easy purchases. And that's why so many people end up with rooms all in the "safe" trendy neutral of the moment.

Yikes! The safe-neutral-everything design rut was bad with brown, drab with grey, and it's sure to be a disaster with black! Just like it was in the 80s.

I'm just saying that a large black sofa is an especially challenging design element to work with. I'm willing to bet you will be much happier to curl up on a sofa in your favourite coral, green or blue in the long run, rather than black.

So, you already have a black sofa and you want to introduce some colour? You'll need lots of white, plus you can use warm cognac browns, deep and leafy greens, as well as gold to balance it.

Pink is a great colour for warming up a black and white palette too.

With a black sofa, it's a good idea to use a light rug. A dark rug will make the room look bottom heavy.

Leopard print is a great way to repeat black and layer in some warm gold and cognac tones.

Is the black sofa trend here to stay?

Yes.

If you would like to indulge in the black and white trend, I recommend that you introduce black in smaller doses rather than a full sofa.

Because here's my prediction: you are going to be just as desperate to get rid of your black sofa in ten years as you were to ditch your espresso brown one. . .not that long ago.

Are you team-curtains or no curtains?

I'm definately drapery fan so last weekend we finally hung the new linen curtains in our living room. Even though there are many modern window treatments and decorations available these days, I believe that nothing creates a dreamy, laidback atmosphere as well as loose, airy curtains gently moving in the wind. I just love that look! On top of that t hey help filter the light making the room shadows softer, add texture and allow a little privacy if your windows are facing other properties like ours. Funny story! Few days after we've hung our curtains our neighbour said she felt sad as she couldn't see us in the evenings anymore (…awkward!) I guess we can say that the curtains serve their purpouse now!

Even though we wanted to get simple, white curtains the choice wasn't easy – what material, how thick, how long, what kind of rail, shall we buy ready-made or get custom ones?

After a little bit of research we decided to go with the IKEA, linen AINA curtains. They are budget friendly and look simply beautiful. The linen is soft and organic and they are 3 meters long which was ideal for our ceiling height. We also got the black curtain rail at IKEA, the overall result is very satisfying I would say.

I like the curtains being long enough to kiss the floor, it might not be the most practical option as it most likely will require more cleaning but the dreamy feeling it definately is worth it, don't you think?
